Welcome to the guide for hosting Fright.

This covers absolutely everything you need to know, from where to grab the best maps and fine-tune your settings to handling any little issues that pop up. While we dive into plenty of detail here, the actual setup is incredibly easy. You’ll be ready for players to run around within minutes.

One quick tip: It’s always best to get a little experience under your belt first. Play a few rounds of Fright before you start running the show. Trust me, it makes everything a lot smoother.

MAPS

Four free maps can be found at the JasX Store in Quiddity, which comes with the Fright HUD.

LOCATIONS

To host the maps, you need to find a location that have enough space and prims.

REZZING

Once you have found the perfect space, it is time to rez the map.
Just make sure you are wearing your Fright HUD before you do. If you happen to forget, don’t worry. The map script will just need a quick reset before the game can start, so there is no need to rerez the map itself.
When you are ready, simply drag the map from your inventory onto the ground.

SETTINGS

Once the map has rezzed, you will automatically be moved to the starting area with the TOME. It will display a loading percentage, so just give it a moment to finish before you start tweaking the settings. As soon as the loading is done, you will have a few options to choose from.

  • Join: Join the match.
  • Reset: Reset and reload all the settings in the TOME.
  • Group Management: Toggle between allowing the set group to manage settings, or just the owner.
  • Invite Player: Manually invite players by name or range.
  • Blacklist Player: Block a player from joining the game.
  • Open Invite: Toggle whether anyone can click to join. If closed, you must manually invite players.
  • Ruleset: Choose the type of game to play. More details are below.
  • GameLength: Set how long the match lasts before it ends.

Ruleset Options

There are several game types you can choose from:

  • Scavenger Mode: Find the treasure and return it to the TOME.
  • Hunter Mode: Similar to Scavenger Mode, but one specific player is designated as the hunter for the entire game.
  • Hunter Tag: Similar to Hunter Mode, but the hunter role shifts to whoever gets caught.
  • King of the Hill: The player who holds the treasure the longest by the end of the game wins.
  • Pouncematch: The player who catches the most people by the end of the match wins.
  • Outbreak: One player starts as the hunter, and anyone they catch joins their side. The last person left standing wins.

Tip: If you are unsure which mode to pick, go with Hunter Tag. It is by far the most popular ruleset.

FINDING PLAYERS

Fright needs a few people to get a game going. Unless you have a crowd of friends ready to jump in, you will want to advertise to the rest of the community.

You can drop a message in these Second Life groups to get people moving:

  • Fright Group: Dedicated entirely to Fright games.
    • secondlife:///app/group/603f7620-008c-9970-797e-acc24d70c2fd/about
  • JasX Group: For general JasX games, but you are welcome to post your game links here too.
    • secondlife:///app/group/6ff2300b-8199-518b-c5be-5be5d864fe1f/about

Keep your post short and sweet using this format: Map, Game Mode, Location.
If you are hosting Frightwood Academy on Hunter Tag at Quiddity, your post should look like this:

This tells everyone exactly what you are playing and where to find you.

STARTING

Once you have a few people locked in, just click the TOME and select Start Game. This will automatically pull everyone right to the TOME to get things rolling.
When the match ends based on your chosen ruleset, everyone will be moved back to the TOME where they can join the next round. As soon as you are ready to go again, simply hit Start Game.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Sometimes issues occur, either due to a glitch on the map or Second Life region lag. Here is how to handle the most common problems.

  • Invisible Walls: This is the most common issue, and the map usually displays a warning about it when it rezzes. Players might run into an invisible wall in an area that should be completely open. This happens when physics collisions do not load correctly. If anyone reports this, right-click the bugged object or area to refresh it. This fixes the issue immediately, and it only needs to be done once per map rez.
  • Stuck Treasure: Occasionally, a treasure might spawn inside an object. If this happens, cam into the object, grab the treasure with your edit tools, and move it out into an open area so players can reach it. You can also check the map’s creator and report the issue to them so they can fix the spawn point.
  • Game Crashes: If a script crashes and throws an error, click the TOME, select End Game, and then hit Reset to reload everything.

Reminder on Auto-Return: The map’s auto-return warning is only a reminder. If the region’s actual auto-return timer is set higher than the default, your map will not suddenly vanish when that countdown ends.

ENDING THE GAME

When you are done hosting, make sure the match is completely over and no one is left playing. If you delete the map early, active props and traps will end up littered across the region.

Once the match is finished, you will need to clean up the area. Depending on the map type, you can do this in one of two ways:

  • Maps without a rezzer: Right-click and edit a section of the map, drag your selection box across the entire build, and delete it. Make sure to cam around the area afterward to confirm everything was cleared.
  • Maps with a rezzer: Click the main rezzing unit and select Derez. This will automatically delete the entire map for you.

FINAL

That is it!
